A Day In The Life...
Sunday October 13th, a reasonably good start last week, a lot of people are not aware if you`re blind, there are a lot of selfish people around who don`t know or don`t understand or even don`t care sometimes.
A few weeks ago somebody left out a shopping trolley in the comunal area, I did`nt see it and ended up tripping over it, the handle caught in my transplanted kidney, not sure if i`ve mentiond it but I have recentley had a kidney transplant, it was very painfull and resulted in my going in and out of hospital for a month having tests because the kidney stopped working properly. The good news now is that it`s slowly getting back to how it should be. So I am now back to once a month hospital visits which is good news. I now have to be extra aware because of what happend, it could have been a lot worse but thankfully it wasn`t.
I know if i`m going to have a good day when I can wake up in the morning and make myself a cup of tea or coffee without scoulding myself, if I can do that then that`s a good start to my day and if I can cook myself at least one meal a day then thats a good day for me. So this is the life we live, as for me, an ex serviceman with the Royal Navy, it`s not a problem but a challenge and there are ways around challenges. When I first went blind one of my problems was when making a tea or coffee I could`nt see the water levels in the cup, so being smart and sensible I decided to put my finger in the cup to the level I wanted, that made the nurses laugh when I had to go to hospital to have the burns looked at.
I do get a lot of help from a military charity called Blind Veterans, they have provided me with lots of helpful gadgets, one of which tells me when the water is at the right level. there are a lot of things out there which can help. I have my phone which is voice activated, maybe a laptop or tablet that did the same would be helpful.
I have also decided to look for somewhere else to live, after the incident with the trolley, there are to many people here for me, I spend most of my time in my flat because i`m to worried about going out and tripping over again. I don`t want any special treatment I just want to be treated as a normal person but in this day and age it`s not easy, most people are just ignorant. All my lightbulbs are bright becasue I need bright light for my type of blindness, if it`s sunny when I go out I have to wear dark glasses but when I wear them indoors I get a lot of sarcastic comments from the other residents, they just don`t understand.
Ray.
